What is a Rule of Life? Centuries ago, the Benedictines, a religious order known for their hospitality, developed a Rule of Life. It was simply a covenant outlining how they would live together in community. For example, how they would solve conflicts, what they could expect of one another, what the community expected of each of them, and how they would work together for the community’s mission.
In recent years, individuals like you and me, are challenged to create a Rule of Life or a Rhythm of Life. A Rhythm of Life is a personal plan, a thoughtful document stating your desire for growth and how you will practice spirituality in your everyday life. It becomes your “guiding light” and aligns with your heart’s desires.

Is it a Rule of Life OR a Rhythm of Life? What you call it really does not matter. Personally, I do not like the word “rule”; it feels rigid and demanding. The word “rhythm” resonates with my soul, it is gentle, flows and brings life to me. Rob Bell says, “Any rhythm you can bring to your life, is life-giving. Rhythm is built into creation.” I love Rhythm of Life. What is your preference?

Why develop a Rhythm of Life? The primary reason to develop a Rhythm of Life, is my best energy goes to what I pay attention to. If I want to stop being so critical, it is best to focus on “seeing the best in everyone.” If I focus on NOT being critical, I am still focused on viewing people through critical lenses. James Redfield says it this way, “Where attention goes energy flows; where intention goes energy flows.” And I know “if I aim at nothing, I will hit it every time.” (Zig Ziglar)
